Awin Shopify auto-validation: what it misses
What Awin’s Shopify auto-validation declines, what it does not (non-Classic accounts, older orders, other networks, codes) and when you need more.
By The AffCheck team · Updated
If your store runs its affiliate programme on Awin, you may already have Awin's own Shopify app installed, and with it an option called Shopify auto-validation. It does real work: it declines cancelled orders and adjusts partial refunds for you. It also has limits that are easy to miss, and the only way to know whether they affect your store is to compare what it did with what Shopify says happened. This page sets out both sides, from Awin's own help centre, checked on 18 Sep 2026.
What the Awin Shopify app does
The app, listed on the Shopify App Store as "Awin ‑ Affiliate Marketing", installs Awin's tracking on your store and can send a product feed. It is free to install. On 18 Sep 2026 its listing showed 1.9★ from 33 reviews.3
Its validation feature is separate from tracking. In the app you turn on "Enable auto-validation of transactions" and set a returns period. From then on, the app watches your Shopify orders and tells Awin what changed.
What Shopify auto-validation covers
Awin describes it plainly:
"Cancelled orders are automatically declined. Partial refunds or returns are applied as adjustments. If no changes happen within your selected returns period, the transaction is automatically approved in Awin."1
So for the orders it sees, the app does the two jobs most merchants do by hand on validation day: it declines cancellations and amends the sale amount after a partial refund. For a store with one network, few codes and every order inside its scope, that may be all you need.
What it doesn't cover
The same help article lists the conditions. Each one is a gap where commission can still be paid on a sale you didn't keep:
- Account type. "This article refers to functionality currently available only on Awin Classic." Programmes on the new Awin interface don't get it.
- Whitelisting. You have to "share your myshopify.com URL with Awin so we can whitelist it first". Until that is done, nothing is validated.
- Orders placed before activation. Asked whether orders placed before activation are auto-validated, Awin answers: "No. Only orders placed after activation are validated." If you switched it on in January, December's holiday orders are yours to check.
- Its own returns period. The app has a returns period of its own, and it is not the same setting as your Awin auto-validation period. If the app's window is longer than Awin's, the network can auto-approve a transaction before the app sends the refund. Awin's validation rule is blunt: a commission that isn't reviewed before the period ends "will be automatically approved in line with your program's auto-validation settings".2 On Awin Access that period can be up to 67 days.4
- Timing. "Auto-validation works in batches and only applies updates after the returns period expires." A refund issued late, after the batch ran, is not picked up.
- Other networks. The app sees Awin only. If CJ, Rakuten Advertising or impact.com also report the same Shopify order, nobody reconciles the two claims.
- Duplicates and codes. Declining because a sale "should have been awarded to a different channel or partner", or because a coupon site used a creator's code, needs data the app doesn't compare.
Did it actually catch it?
The quickest test is last month's approved Awin export against your Shopify refunds. Every refunded order that still shows as approved is commission the sync missed.
When the Awin app is enough
Be honest with yourself here, because it saves you a subscription:
- You are on Awin Classic, your domain is whitelisted, and the feature has been on longer than your validation period.
- Awin is your only network, so no order can be claimed twice across networks.
- You don't give creators or publishers their own discount codes, or you already block leaked codes at checkout.
- The app's returns period is shorter than your Awin validation period, so its updates land before auto-approval.
If all four are true, keep the Awin app and check a sample once a quarter. The free check does that in a few minutes.
When you need a second check
You need something beyond the app when any of these is true:
- you run two or more networks, or Awin plus an in-house programme;
- your programme is on the new Awin interface, or older orders are still pending;
- creator codes turn up on coupon or cashback sites;
- finance wants evidence per line: which refund, which date, which amount.
AffCheck is built for that second check. It reads each network's export, matches every pending transaction to its Shopify order and suggests decline or amend with the refund ID beside it. You confirm, then upload Awin's batch file yourself. Nothing is declined automatically. See how refund matching works and how duplicate claims are grouped.
Side by side
Checked on 18 Sep 2026 from Awin's help centre and the App Store listing (sources below). AffCheck is pre-launch; its column describes the planned app and the free check.

Can I use both?
Yes. AffCheck asks Shopify for read-only access and changes nothing in your store or in Awin, so it runs alongside the Awin app. Many stores will keep the app for tracking and use AffCheck to check what auto-validation did and didn't do. If you only need the file format, the Awin batch validation file builder is free.
Network facts checked on 18 Sep 2026 against each network’s own documentation.

FAQ
Questions, answered
Does the Awin Shopify app decline refunded orders?
Partly. With Shopify auto-validation on, cancelled orders are declined and partial refunds or returns are applied as adjustments. It works only on Awin Classic, for orders placed after activation, on a domain Awin has whitelisted, and it applies updates in batches after the app’s own returns period.
What is Awin Classic?
Awin’s original advertiser interface. Awin marks some help articles, including Shopify auto-validation and the batch upload, as available only on Awin Classic; programmes on the newer Awin interface don’t get those features.
How do I get my domain whitelisted for auto-validation?
Awin asks you to share your myshopify.com URL with them so they can whitelist it before the feature is enabled. Contact your Awin account team or support.
Can I use AffCheck with the Awin app installed?
Yes. AffCheck asks Shopify for read-only access and changes nothing in your store or in Awin, so it runs alongside the Awin app and shows what auto-validation did and didn’t catch.
